Lier has been on my list of
must see places in Belgium for quite a while. This was due to the clock tower
located in the small town. The Zimmer/Cornelius tower was built by an
astronomer and clockmaker. It also houses the Jubelee clock which was my main interest.
Other than the tower, there wasn’t that much
to see. The town is very small and easy to navigate. As all small towns in
Belgium the buildings had beautiful architecture. Another stop in the town was
the information office which was well worth it. The interior was still old
fashioned with large chandeliers, a red carpet staircase and an impeccable
dining room which was open to the public to appreciate from behind ropes. Even
if you don’t need to go to the tourist office I suggest you do, just to
appreciate the building inside.
After that I walked to the Zimmer tower which was about two blocks
away from the city square. The street had restaurants filled with people
enjoying the good weather and at the end of the street stood the tower. It was
smaller than I thought it would be, but beautiful none the less. The clock was
luxurious compared to the rest of the tower which had a small garden
surrounding the back.
I spent some time in the park which was located further down the
street and to the right. The park had a lovely pond with loads of trees and
some ducks. The town can be seen in a day and is definitely worth it if you are
already in the area.
