If
you like being surrounded by old books while having a coffee or a light lunch
and you happen to be in Ghent then be sure to visit Le Bal Infernal. After
about six months of living in Ghent my friend and I found (or saw) this little
gem. It took another month before we actually went inside.
Inside
was a tree with tables all around it. A warm looking bar was against the wall
followed by books – lots and lots of books. It was like being inside a
breathing library. The atmosphere was classic yet comfortable in an inviting
way.We sat
at a table next to the wall of used books where I could read the different
titles and a few passages from interesting looking books (including Fifty Shades
of Gray in Dutch) while we waited for our drinks and soup. The soup was
delicious and served with some soft bread.
It was
one of those places where time stood still and all the details seemed brighter;
the illustrations against the wall, the calming music, the texture of pages,
the smell of substance and sound of humans. Le Bal is a special place and if
you visit make sure to go to the restroom, it is beautifully decorated with
postcards and pages. Also make sure to check the times - they are strange.
