STAM | Ghent | Belgium

One of the best ways to learn more about a place is going to its city museum, so that’s what a friend and I did. We visited the city museum of Ghent, the STAM. It was quite something, for starters the museum is made out of a few buildings all connected together, making it one beautiful building.

On the first floor we started by wearing protection socks over our shoes and then entered a room which had the entire Ghent layout on the floor. The centre was made of actual models and some parts of the floor winded up the wall because it was so big. It was incredible to see the city from above and it took me only a few second to find where I live and it was so small on the large scale.

The next part was the view of a church from the balcony and then a big hall where nuns used to eat, with a huge fireplace. The rest of the museum was made of rooms with different parts of history, paintings and objects. There was also a treasury room which felt like stepping back in time, with dark wood and gold patterns against the wall. Next was a table piled with small white Lego’s where a few extraordinary building already stood. So we took our seats and started building some buildings of our own, not nearly as great as already existing ones, but good enough.

The museum ended in the church where some clothes, shoes and ceramics were on display. I think it’s really worth it if you are interested in Ghent’s history, present and past.
