City museums are a great way to get an
overview of a city; all the history – boring and interesting – important people,
important buildings and everything in between. One of my favourite things about
city museums is to see how the city looked a few hundred years back – if there
was even a city.
Brussels city museum is located in the
Grand Place or as I call it, square of gold. It is one of the most visited
places in Brussels where the surrounding buildings are magnificent and captivating.
The museum itself was located in an old building. Inside the walls were made of
stone, the stairs had red carpeting and the stained glass was a finishing
touch. It would have been great to see the building inside alone, but it was
filled with history, making it feel more like a journey back in time.
The first level was mostly dedicated to
sculpture, strange dining ornaments and some religious paintings. The second
hosted more paintings, some small scale houses of the city and more objects. On
the third level were the main objects of my interest. I mostly wanted to visit
the museum because of its closet of clothes which belongs to the Mannekin Piss.
A statue a few blocks away. If you didn’t know, they dress him up in different
outfits. On the third level of the museum were a lot of his clothes on display.
The variety of clothes was ridiculous. There was an outfit for every event, my
favourite being a costume made of colourful balls. There was also database
where I saw some other outfits as well. It is things like this that make Belgium
so enjoy full.
Our day ended with an apple flavoured
beer after we went to see the real Mannekin piss outside. If you are lucky
there won’t be a selfie mob trying to get their photos with a small boy peeing.
Otherwise just make your way through the people; it’s worth it to get a glimpse
– especially if he’s in an outfit.
