6e Groote Dekenijfeesten | Ghent

I love going to markets, there is something special about buying something over a characteristically skew and packed table, rather than going to a shop with lifeless décor. (They usually have better prices as well, because they don’t have to pay rent). The past Sunday a friend and I went to the Dekenijfeesten rommelmarkt, which is basically a huge public jumble sale market.

People from the neighbourhood brought all the belongings they didn’t want to the streets to try and sell as much as possible Items like clothes, shoes, old toys, jewellery, antiques, books, vinyl’s and other random items were spread out to be browse and bought at reasonable prices. Seeing what people owned – and wanted to get rid off - was quite fascinating. It gave a sneak preview of their taste in items and how it had developed. There were also a few people who sold animals, like birds, chickens, fish, rabbits and even baby tortoises. To make the experience of buying other peoples old stuff even more pleasant was the background music, as well as places to sit and eat or drink something while watching the crowd.

After we finished browsing we had some lunch and relaxed in a cosy restaurant. The rain started to pour down and without any rain jackets we were getting soaked, so we headed home. It was an interesting day and an even more interesting market and the items bought definitely had some character.
