While observing the antiques, a part of the Saint Nicholas Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk)
could be seen through a glass door. So we decided to go have a look inside. The
church was huge, but not as huge as the St. Bravo’s cathedral (Sint-Braafskatedraal)
down the street (which we also visited, but weren’t allowed to take photos
inside).
The church was having a photography exhibition for the public. The photos
were off graveyards around the world. I spotted a photo which looked so typical
for South Africa and then it turned out is was from there. It was very
interesting to see how graves looked all around the world; it was even more
interesting to see how the photographer captured it.
The church itself was as impressive as most European churches, with
loads of detail, high ceilings and strange décor. By strange décor I mean the
statues, sculptures and other objects. If you are European it might not be
strange to you, but I’m use to a church being a building without any historical
aspects. Either way, I enjoy going to explore churches and admire the art which
they possess. This one is a must-see if you are visiting Ghent.
