The main reason for the day trip to Cologne,
Germany was to visit the Christmas markets. There were seven in total, spread
throughout the city. We managed to see a few, each with its own vibe and
character and some even with their own theme.
The main attractions at the markets were food, gluhwein
and gifts. There was a huge variety of everything. We saw the most beautiful
gifts, tea, toys, cookies, candles, treats, woodwork, clothes, jewellery and so
much more. I was expecting the majority of food to be meat, but was surprised to
find something of everything. The most common was hot dogs, potato cakes with
apple mousse, mushrooms with sauce, pretzels, apple strudel and other strange
food. I was lucky enough to find a place where I could buy vegan food and ended
up with chilli and bread. There were quite a few vegan products and a lot of
bio products which made me like Cologne even more.
Hot drinks were served and
the most popular was gluhwein, a warm wine. I had white and red gluhwein; the
red was spicy and the white was sour, but they were both delicious and helped
with keeping warm. Gluhwein (and other beverages) were served in a mug which we
had to pay a deposit for. Every mug was unique and matched with the theme of
the market it was at. We saw four different mugs, each unique, colourful and
playful. We all went home with a different mug; it was a great souvenir to take
home, even though we weren’t supposed to.
The city really placed a lot of detail and effort
into making each market unique and interesting. Overall Cologne and its
Christmas markets were breathtaking with a great atmosphere. I recommend it to
anyone who loves Christmas markets!
